About HKCRES

Hong Kong Center for Renewable Energy and Storage (HKCRES) is a new InnoHK R&D Center established in September 2026 dedicated to advancing clean energy innovation and sustainable solutions. Integrating cutting-edge academic discovery with real-world industrial needs, the Center focuses on four strategic R&D pillars: recyclable perovskite solar cells, low-carbon hydrogen systems, ultra-safe solid-state batteries, and AI-optimized energy management.

With The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) as the leading institution in collaboration with local and international institutions, HKCRES aims to be a globally leading hub for renewable energy and storage research, innovation, knowledge transfer, and policy advocacy.

We are seeking highly motivated and talented Post-doctoral Fellows to join our interdisciplinary research teams. The position will be based at the Hong Kong Science Park in Shatin, with frequent travel to the HKUST’s Clear Water Bay Campus as required.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

The appointee(s) will collaborate closely with the core research team under the supervision of Prof. Guanghao Chen on AI-Optimized Energy Management & Smart Routers. Primary focuses include modular multi-energy router architecture, resilience-oriented grid control, and real-time system validation for deeply integrated solar–battery–hydrogen microgrids.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Conduct cutting-edge research under the direction of the Research Programme Lead.
  • Design, develop, and validate power electronic prototypes, stability models, and control algorithms for multi-energy integration and coordination, including water–energy applications.
  • Collaborate with industrial partners (e.g., CATL, Siemens, CLP, and Towngas) on system integration and technology validation.
  • Publish high-impact scientific papers and contribute to patent filings and technology licensing.
  • Mentor junior research assistants, operate laboratory equipment, and manage assigned project deliverables.
  • Support the laboratory by performing other related research duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • A Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Energy Engineering, Automation, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent research or professional experience.
  • Proven track record of scientific publications in reputable international peer-reviewed journals.
  • Preferably 3+ years of relevant research experience.

    • Advanced power semiconductor devices and high-efficiency converter topologies;
    • Modular architectures and advanced control strategies for multi-energy routers;
    • Converter-dominated grid stability and grid-forming/grid-following control;
    • Multi-energy integration, data-driven optimisation, and coordinated energy management for smart grids and critical urban infrastructure, including water–energy systems;
    • Real-time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
  • Experience in patent applications, engineering implementation, or technology demonstration would be an advantage.
  • Strong problem-solving capabilities, self-motivation, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment.
