The Power Semiconductors and Applications Center (PowerSAC), established under the SEAM@InnoHK initiative, is seeking a Research Scientist to contribute to and help lead the scientific and technical development of GaN/SiC Hybrid Power Transistors.

 

Reporting to the Programme Lead, the appointee will support the research, design, fabrication, characterization, integration, and technology-development activities of GaN/SiC HyFETs. The role requires strong technical depth in compound semiconductor devices, hands-on experimental capability, and the ability to work across device physics, process development, packaging, and system-oriented power applications.

 

key responsibilities

 

  • Conduct R&D on GaN/SiC HyFETs, including device & packaging design, fabrication support, characterization, and performance optimization.
  • Contribute to simulation, process development, and experimental validation of wide-bandgap power transistor structures.
  • Prepare technical reports, publications, patent disclosures, project deliverables, and milestone documentation.
  • Work closely with academic collaborators, industry partners, engineers, and external fabrication/testing facilities to deliver programme milestones.

 

Requirements

 

  • PhD in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Microelectronics, Semiconductor Devices, Materials Science, Applied Physics, or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong background in wide-bandgap semiconductor devices.
  • Hands-on experience in semiconductor device fabrication, cleanroom processes, process optimization, or device characterization.
  • Experience with simulation–fabrication–characterization workflows and experimental troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with EBL, lithography, MOCVD, and high-frequency/power device testing would be an advantage.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and public engagement skills.
  • Proven research track record through publications, project outputs, patents, or technology-development experience.
  • Strong analytical, communication, presentation, and teamwork skills; good command of written and spoken English, with Chinese proficiency advantageous.

 

Remuneration and COnditions of Service

Salary is competitive and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including annual leave, medical and dental benefits will be provided.
