Job Description
Company Name:
Power Semiconductors and Applications Center (PowerSAC)
Job Title: Research Scientist (RP4-2)
Ref. No.: PowerSAC0016
RP4-2 is a research project within PowerSAC focused on "Advanced Power Semiconductors for Smart Automobility". The Research Scientist will lead the development and experimental validation of advanced power electronic systems for electric vehicles, covering SiC-based traction inverters and high-power wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. The role integrates power converter design and control, soft-switching techniques, magnetic component optimization, and thermal management. Research includes an 800-V, 200-kW SiC traction inverter incorporating QCM soft-switching and jet impingement cooling, and a 22-kW WPT system using Fe-based nanocrystalline cores, viaduct lamination, flux balancing, and multi-permeability design. The appointee will coordinate modelling, prototyping, and validation, and contribute to reporting, publications, intellectual property, collaboration, and technology transfer.
Key Responsibilities:
The appointee will be responsible for:
- Define and maintain the technical roadmap for RP4-2 power electronic systems, translating RP4-2 objectives into executable tasks, prototype specifications, validation plans, and milestones aligned with PowerSAC and InnoHK requirements.
- Lead development of an 800-V, 200-kW SiC traction inverter, including power-stage and gate-drive design, QCM soft-switching, modulation, parasitic and current-sharing analysis, differential-mode inductor optimization, and jet impingement cooling integration.
- Lead development of a 22-kW WPT system using Fe-based nanocrystalline cores. Develop analytical and homogenized models, including anisotropic permeability representations; optimize viaduct lamination, flux balancers, and multi-permeability cores; and co-design the coupler, resonant network, and converter.
- Establish integrated simulation and experimental workflows for power converters and magnetic components. Fabricate and validate prototypes against agreed specifications, assessing efficiency, losses, power density, and thermal performance, together with inverter dynamic response, WPT flux distribution, and coupling performance.
- Guide and mentor research and engineering personnel; coordinate safe laboratory operations, resources, and collaborations; and prepare technical documentation, progress reports, and milestone evidence.
- Lead publications and intellectual property activities, identify patentable innovations, and support industrial evaluation, system integration, and technology transfer.
REQUIREMENTS
- PhD degree, with research relevant to power electronics, electric drives, wireless power transfer, or magnetic components.
- Relevant research experience in power electronics, traction inverters, electric drives, WPT, magnetic components, or related fields. postdoctoral or industrial R&D experience is preferred.
- Strong expertise in power electronic converters, with experience in SiC traction inverters, motor drives, high-power WPT, resonant conversion, or magnetic-coupler design.
- Experience in soft-switching, modulation and digital control, gate drives, parallel SiC devices, parasitic effects, current sharing, and switching-loss analysis.
- Experience in nanocrystalline magnetic materials, coupler and loss modelling, electromagnetic-thermal finite-element analysis, and multi-objective optimization.
- Hands-on experience in prototype development, high-power testing, thermal measurement, and data analysis; proficiency in relevant tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, Python, PLECS, or electromagnetic simulation software.
- Experience in publications, patents, project reporting, industry collaboration, or technology transfer is an advantage.
- Proficiency in English and Chinese.
